Matthews Drives in Two, But Rainiers Hold Off Space Cowboys
Friday night's showdown in Tacoma was a nail-biting thriller that went down to the wire! Brice Matthews came out SWINGING for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, launching a solo SHOT into the stratosphere in the very first inning! The Space Cowboys drew first blood, taking an early 1-0 lead!
But the Tacoma Rainiers weren't about to back down! They roared back in the bottom of the first, with Tyler Locklear cracking a clutch two-out RBI double to knot the score at one apiece!
The excitement continued to build in the second! Salazar and Bastidas reached base, followed by a walk from Short after a sacrifice bunt, JUICING THE BASES for the red-hot Matthews! He delivered again, lofting a sacrifice fly that allowed Salazar to slide home, putting Sugar Land back on top, 2-1!
However, the Rainiers answered with FURY in the bottom of the second, plating two runs to snatch the lead, 3-2! The tension was palpable!
Enter Rhett Kouba in the fourth, extinguishing a Tacoma threat with a spectacular inning-ending double play! Then, Kaleb Ort brought the HEAT in the sixth, dialing up a 97.2 mph fastball for a called third strike to escape a jam!
The Space Cowboys refused to go quietly! In the seventh, Bastidas walked, Sacco singled, and Short walked again to LOAD THE BASES with just one out! But Tacoma's Cronin slammed the door shut with a heart-stopping double play!
Sugar Land kept fighting! In the eighth, Price reached on an error, and Corona ripped a single with two outs, putting the tying run in scoring position! But they couldn't push that crucial run across!
Nick Robertson was lights out for the Space Cowboys in the seventh and eighth, keeping the deficit at a single run! But in the end, the Tacoma Rainiers held on, silencing the Space Cowboys in the ninth to snatch a dramatic 3-2 victory! What a game!
