Aviators Walk Off Space Cowboys
Despite two-run home runs from Shay Whitcomb and César Salazar, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (7-9) ultimately lost to the Las Vegas Aviators (11-5) in a 6-5 walk-off defeat on Tuesday afternoon at Las Vegas Ballpark.
Sugar Land initiated the scoring in the first inning. Shay Whitcomb singled, Jacob Melton followed with his first double of the season, and Collin Price hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Space Cowboys an early 1-0 advantage.
Las Vegas responded in the second inning, scoring three runs via a two-run homer and a two-out double. However, Sugar Land quickly tied the game in the third when Whitcomb launched a 378-foot, two-run homer to left field, scoring Kenedy Corona who had singled earlier.
The Aviators regained the lead with a run in the third, but the Space Cowboys surged ahead again in the fourth. César Salazar hit his first home run of the season, a 393-foot blast to right field with Quincy Hamilton aboard, putting Sugar Land up 5-4.
Relief pitcher Jayden Murray delivered two scoreless innings for Sugar Land starting in the fifth. Nick Robertson also pitched a scoreless seventh inning, maintaining the 5-4 lead.
In the eighth inning, Las Vegas tied the game at 5-5 when Darrell Hernaiz hit a solo home run off Kaleb Ort, who was making a Major League rehab appearance for Sugar Land. The game concluded in the bottom of the ninth when Daniel Susac hit a walk-off solo home run, securing the 6-5 victory for the Aviators.
