HOUSTON, TX – Despite a 73-61 loss to UCF on Senior Day at Fertitta Center, graduate guard Laila Blair etched her name further into University of Houston Women's Basketball history, moving to second on the program's all-time scoring list.
Blair, playing her final home game, surpassed Sharion Higgins' 1,957 points, finishing with 18 points against UCF and bringing her career total to 1,960. This milestone was a bright spot in a tough outing for the Cougars (5-24, 1-17 Big 12).
Eylia Love led Houston's scoring efforts with 20 points, while Gigi Cooke contributed 11, including six from the free-throw line. However, UCF (11-17, 4-14 Big 12) proved too strong, securing their fourth conference win with four players scoring in double figures.
Kaitlin Peterson led the Knights with 25 points, followed by Nevaeh Brown with 13. Khyala Ngodu recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Emely Rodriguez added 11.
The Cougars started strong, with Love scoring 11 first-quarter points to give Houston a 21-16 lead. They extended their advantage to 26-20 in the second quarter, but a decisive 16-2 run by UCF shifted momentum, giving the Knights a 36-28 halftime lead.
Cooke's early three-point play in the third quarter narrowed the gap, but UCF responded with a 6-0 run, pushing their lead to 11. Houston struggled offensively in the latter part of the third, managing only one field goal, while a buzzer-beating layup from Peterson gave UCF a commanding 56-40 lead entering the final quarter.
UCF extended their lead to as many as 20 in the fourth, though Houston managed to cut the deficit to 10. However, the Cougars' offense stalled in the final two minutes, allowing UCF to secure the victory and close out their regular season with a win.
