Thompson reaches 200 points as LOVB Houston holds off LOVB Omaha
LOVB Houston opposite hitter Jordan Thompson became the first League One Volleyball player to reach 200 points in a season Saturday night while leading her team to a 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23 win over LOVB Omaha.
Thompson ended the match with 23 points – 21 kills on a .474 attack percentage, two blocks – and 13 digs, earning player of the match for the fifth time this season. The Houston Founding Athlete has four matches of at least 20 kills this season and also leads the league with 193 kills.
The win also allowed Houston (9-5) to remain in contention for the regular season title and top seed at April’s LOVB Finals. Houston is two matches shy of LOVB Atlanta (11-3) with two to go, including a showdown between the top-ranked teams on Thursday, March 27 in Houston. Should Houston and Atlanta finish with the same record, Houston would earn the top seed via tiebreaker (head-to-head record; Houston is 2-0 in regular season play).
Omaha (4-9) has two matches next week: Friday, March 28 at LOVB Austin and Saturday, March 29 vs. Salt Lake.
Houston trailed for just a handful of points during the first two sets, but the teams traded narrow leads and tie scores throughout the third. With the score even at 23, Omaha’s Jaali Winters landed a kill and Madi Kubik-Banks blocked an attack to force a fourth set. That frame was also tightly contested, but this time Houston scored the final two points off kills from Thompson and Jess Mruzik.
Besides Thompson, four other players reached double-digit points for Houston: Amber Igiede scored 13, Madi Kingdon Rishel 12, and both Mruzik and Folie added 10 apiece. Omaha opposite hitter Kimberly Drewniok led the home team with 19 points – 16 kills, two blocks, one ace – Kubik-Banks scored 13 and newcomer Sami Francis added 11.
