USWNT Falls to Japan in SheBelieves Cup
The U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) suffered a 2-1 defeat to Japan in the SheBelieves Cup, ending their 18-match unbeaten run under coach Emma Hayes. Japan's victory, secured with goals from Yūka Momiki and Tōko Koga, marked their first SheBelieves Cup title.
Playing at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, the USWNT aimed for a sixth consecutive SheBelieves Cup win. However, Japan struck early, with Momiki scoring within two minutes. Ally Sentnor quickly equalized for the U.S., but Koga's second-half goal proved decisive. Despite late opportunities for Jaedyn Shaw and Tierna Davidson, the U.S. couldn't overcome Japan's lead.
This loss breaks the USWNT's impressive run since Hayes took over last June, which included Olympic gold aspirations. The USWNT was aiming for their 8th SheBelieves Cup title in 10 editions. With both teams entering the match with wins over Colombia and Australia, this match served as the tournament decider due to goal differential.
Hayes acknowledged Japan's superior performance, emphasizing the team's ongoing development. She highlighted the value of this experience for identifying areas for improvement, particularly with a relatively inexperienced squad. Five of the U.S. starters had fewer than 10 caps, including goalscorer Sentnor. Hayes defended the loss by pointing out the vast experience difference between the two teams.
The USWNT's record under Hayes now stands at 15 wins, two draws, and one loss. They will next play Brazil in two friendlies in April.
In the tournament's other match, Colombia defeated Australia 2-1, securing third place and leaving Australia winless.
