GLENDALE, ARIZ. (Feb. 23, 2025) -- Get ready for fireworks! The U.S. Women's National Team is on the cusp of SheBelieves Cup history after a heart-stopping 2-1 triumph over Australia! Lynn Biyendolo's lightning-fast strike in the very first minute and Michelle Cooper's maiden international goal ignited a packed stadium and propelled the USA towards a potential sixth consecutive title.
This victory over the tenacious Matildas was a spectacle in itself, played before a roaring crowd of 23,503 fans. Coach Emma Hayes made history with a bold move, swapping out all 11 starters from the previous game! This audacious strategy, a first in decades, showcased the depth and versatility of the USWNT squad.
The starting lineup was a breath of fresh air, the youngest USWNT team since 2001! It featured the electrifying international debut of 19-year-old Claire Hutton, and the inspiring sight of Tierna Davidson leading the team as captain for the first time. And get this – sisters Alyssa and Gisele Thompson took the field together, becoming only the second sister duo to start a USWNT game!
Talk about a dream start! Just 41 seconds into the game, Biyendolo struck gold! A blistering attack, a brilliant run by Emma Sears, and a perfectly placed pass from Jaedyn Shaw set up Biyendolo for a clinical finish. The stadium erupted! It was the USA's fastest goal since 2021 and the 50th goal in SheBelieves Cup history!
The first half was a whirlwind of attacking football, with the USA's speed and precision causing havoc for the Matildas. Although Australia found their footing later in the half, they couldn't penetrate the resolute USWNT defense.
The second half brought even more drama. Cooper, just minutes after coming on as a substitute, etched her name into USWNT folklore with a stunning goal! A beautiful combination play with Yazmeen Ryan and Ally Sentnor resulted in Cooper’s first international goal – a moment she'll never forget!
But the Matildas weren't going down without a fight. They answered back with a rocket of a goal, setting up a nail-biting finish. But the USA held firm, securing a monumental victory and setting the stage for an unforgettable final against Japan!
The stats tell the story: the USA dominated with 15 shots to Australia's 7. The USWNT now boasts a commanding record against Australia, with 30 wins, 1 loss, and 5 draws. Get ready for an epic showdown! The SheBelieves Cup is on the line, and the USWNT is ready to seize the moment as the stage is set for an epic showdown! USA will clash with Japan, their familiar rivals, for the SheBelieves Cup trophy on Feb. 26 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego (7:30 p.m. PT / 10:30 p.m. ET; TBS, Universo, Max, Peacock, Westwood One Sports). Japan, fresh off a dominant 4-1 victory over Colombia, holds a crucial advantage thanks to goal difference. A draw seals their first-ever SheBelieves crown. But the never-say-die USA? They're going for the win, aiming for their eighth overall championship!
