On Sunday, September 8, the Houston Texans defeated the Indianapolis Colts 29–27 to kick off the 2024 NFL season. Key players like running back Joe Mixon, who reached the 100-yard mark, and wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who scored two touchdowns, gave outstanding performances in the game.

In the divisional round, the defending AFC South champions won their tenth straight road game at the same location where they secured a postseason spot in Week 18 of the previous campaign. C.J. Stroud completed 24 of 32 passes for 234 yards with no interceptions.

Taking nearly seven minutes off the clock and finding Diggs for his second touchdown, the Texans' young quarterback, C.J. Stroud, orchestrated a pivotal drive in the fourth quarter. The quarterback Anthony Richardson showed off his impressive skill set late in the game to drive 73 yards for a score and get the Colts within two points. The Colts battled back.

With 4:42 left in the game, Diggs grabbed two touchdowns on six throws for 33 yards: a 9-yard reception that gave Houston a 12-point lead that it never gave up and a 2-yard reception on fourth-and-goal that effectively sealed the victory.

In the fourth quarter, Mixon scored on a 3-yard run on the first play after a holding penalty negated a Colts interception. Mixon ran the ball 30 times, finishing with his greatest single-game rushing total since amassing a career-best 165 yards against Pittsburgh in November 2021.

Mixon completed the victory with three strong runs on the Texans' last play, letting Houston run out the clock. After further review, wide receiver Nico Collins was also credited with a crucial sideline catch that helped the Texans keep the ball and win.

Ka'imi Fairbairn converted three field goals from 50 yards or more, and Collins had his third straight big game against the Colts. Collins caught six catches for 117 yards, including a 55-yarder that set up Diggs' first touchdown. Richardson's 60-yard touchdown pass to Alec Pierce in the opening quarter gave the Colts a 7-3 lead.

On September 15, the Texans will host the Chicago Bears with the goal of opening the season with a 2-0 record.
