In a performance that sent shockwaves through the city, the University of Houston absolutely dismantled their crosstown rivals, Rice, in the annual Bayou Bucket matchup. Led by a suffocating defense and explosive offense, the Coogs delivered a statement win that marked their first victory under new head coach Willie Fritz.
The game was a one-sided affair from the start. Houston quarterback Donovan Smith orchestrated a masterful performance, accounting for three touchdowns, including two on the ground. Running back Stacy Sneed added another touchdown with a dazzling 65-yard burst. But the play of the game came from wide receiver Mekhi Mews, who electrified the crowd with a 75-yard punt return touchdown, a feat not seen since Tank Dell's electrifying run in 2022.
Rice's offense struggled to find any rhythm against Houston's dominant defense. The Owls were held to a measly 149 yards of total offense and were unable to convert on third down. A late touchdown from Dean Connors prevented a shutout, but it was too little, too late.
After the game, Coach Fritz expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, praising their execution and effort on both sides of the ball. He also highlighted the contributions of several young players who stepped up and made a difference.
The win was a significant boost for the Coogs, who had suffered back-to-back losses to Oklahoma and UNLV. It also served as a reminder of their potential and the bright future that lies ahead under Coach Fritz.
