Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt laced up his cleats (well, maybe softball spikes) for a good cause this past weekend at the 4th annual J.J. Watt Charity Classic. Held on May 4th, 2024, at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, the event saw Watt and a host of other celebrities trade football helmets for batting helmets in a friendly game of softball.
The focus of the Charity Classic was firmly on fun and fundraising. Watt's team, the "Texans Legends," comprised of former Texans greats like Andre Johnson and Shane Lechler, battled it out against the "Current Texans," featuring some of the team's rising stars. While the final score might not be recorded in the history books, the true victory belonged to the JJ Watt Foundation.
Proceeds from the event benefit the foundation's mission to support after-school athletic programs for middle school students. The funds will go towards purchasing uniforms and equipment, ensuring all kids have the opportunity to participate in sports.
"The Charity Classic is always one of my favorite days of the year," Watt said. The camaraderie between the current and former Texans players, along with the participation of celebrities, undoubtedly contributed to the enjoyment of the event.
While details on celebrity participants beyond the Texans family are scarce, the presence of Watt and his infectious enthusiasm likely drew a significant crowd. Fans no doubt relished the opportunity to see their favorite athletes outside their usual element, swinging for the fences (or at least attempting to) for a worthy cause.
The J.J. Watt Charity Classic is a testament to Watt's dedication to giving back to the community. By combining athletic competition with charitable giving, the event provides a fun and impactful way to support after-school sports programs and inspire young athletes.
