The Showboats Start Strong, Hold Off Roughnecks in UFL Opener
The Memphis Showboats (1-0) kicked off their United Football League season with an 18-12 victory over the Houston Roughnecks (0-1) at Rice Stadium on Sunday. Despite the loss, fans were just happy to see their favorite Spring Football team back in action.
Early Lead for Memphis
The Showboats struck first with a 27-yard field goal by Matt Coghlin late in the first quarter. Shortly after, Memphis capitalized on a Houston fumble. Isiah Hennie fumbled a short pass, and Christian McFarland scooped the loose ball, returning it 12 yards for a touchdown and a 9-0 lead.
Showboats Extend Lead
Later in the first half, Case Cookus connected with Vinny Papale for a clutch touchdown on 3rd-and-8. Papale made a spectacular catch, keeping his toes inbounds for a 15-0 advantage.
Roughnecks Respond
Houston managed a field goal before halftime and another early in the third quarter to close the gap to 15-6. The Roughnecks capitalized with their only touchdown of the game, pulling within six points at 18-12 with under six minutes remaining.
Showboats Secure the Win
Memphis controlled the clock in the closing minutes. A mishandled punt by Houston's Isiah Hennie recovered by Wes Saxton sealed the victory for the Showboats.
