The Houston Roughnecks (1-4) fought valiantly but fell short against the undefeated Birmingham Stallions (5-0) in their first of two meetings this season. The final score was 32-9.
Fresh off their first win, the Roughnecks hoped to extend their streak. However, facing the USFL conference leader proved a tough challenge. Birmingham struck first with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back Ricky Person within the opening minutes. Houston struggled offensively in the first quarter, managing only 12 plays.
The Roughnecks responded in the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal by kicker P.J.J. Molson, narrowing the deficit to 6-3. Birmingham answered back with a dominant offensive performance. Touchdowns by Rountree, Person, and a successful two-point conversion pushed their lead to 26-3. Houston managed a touchdown before halftime when quarterback Reid Sinnett connected with tight end Braedon Bowman for a 1-yard score, making it 26-9.
The second half saw a slower pace. Birmingham added a field goal in the third quarter to extend their lead to 29-9. Despite a valiant effort by the Houston defense, the offense couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities. In the fourth quarter, another Birmingham field goal increased their advantage to 32-9.
A late interception by Stallions sealed the Roughnecks' fate. Houston will look to rebound next week as they travel north to face the XFL's top seed, the St. Louis Battlehawks, on Saturday, May 4th, at The Dome at America's Center. The game will be televised on FOX at 2:00 pm CT.
