Houston came back from behind to defeat West Virginia 41-39 in a thrilling Big 12 Conference game on Saturday. The game's final 1:17 saw the two teams tally 13 points, with the Cougars getting the game-winning score on a Hail Mary touchdown pass from Donovan Smith to Stephon Johnson on the final play of the game.

West Virginia appeared to have the game won when Garrett Greene completed a fourth-down pass to Hudson Clement for a 50-yard touchdown, giving the Mountaineers a 38-35 lead with just 12 seconds left. However, Houston got the ball back at its own 43-yard line with seven seconds to go and Smith was able to find Johnson deep in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Smith finished the game completing 21 of his 27 pass attempts for 253 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson had six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner.

Greene threw for a career-high 391 yards for West Virginia, but he also had two interceptions. Devin Carter led all receivers with five catches for 116 yards.

The Mountaineers outgained Houston 546 to 393, but turnovers and special teams miscues cost them the game.

Houston's victory was their first in Big 12 Conference play and it moved them to 3-3 on the season. West Virginia fell to 4-2 with the loss.
