Dynamo FC falls to Sounders FC
HOUSTON (Saturday, May 13, 2023) – Houston Dynamo FC suffered defeat at home for the first time this season, falling to Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 at Shell Energy Stadium tonight. Today’s match was paused for 61 minutes at the ninth minute of the game due to inclement weather in the area.
Houston played with 10 men for 57 minutes following a video review of a challenge by forward Amine Bassi. The Dynamo played the final 12 minutes with nine players after midfielder Héctor Herrera received his second yellow card of the match. The result ended a six-match unbeaten streak in all competitions for Houston.
The Dynamo tallied 536 minutes without conceding a goal at home this year and this was Houston’s first loss since April 1. The Dynamo faced heavy pressure this evening and faced 12 shots from Seattle, blocking four and finishing with 15 clearances.
Seattle broke through in the 87th minute when defender Alex Roldán delivered a low cross from the right side of the box that found its way to midfielder Paul Rothrock at the back post for the game-winning goal. This match marked Rothrock’s debut for Seattle, who entered the game at the 83rd minute.
Houston had the first scoring opportunity in the 13th minute when midfielder Artur won possession from a Sounders defender and fed the ball to Bassi. The 25-year-old found forward Corey Baird entering the middle of the box, however, the shot was blocked by defender Jackson Ragen with a sliding tackle.
The match’s first shot on goal came in the 69th minute when Seattle midfielder Albert Rusnák took a shot from just outside the penalty box. Goalkeeper Steve Clark was well positioned to secure the ball after making the initial save.
A Dynamo corner in stoppage time saw a free header opportunity for defender Ethan Bartlow in the middle of the box, but his attempt to net a late equalizer carried too high over the crossbar.
