Roughnecks defeat Brahmas in OT and clinch berth in the XFL South Division Championship game
Houston, Texas (April 9th, 2023)--The Houston Roughnecks snapped their three-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon as they took down the San Antonio Brahmas by a score
of 17-15 (OT) at the Alamodome. The gamehad an attendance of 12,243.
Houston (5-3 overall; 5-0 division) remains in first place in the XFL South, while San Antonio
(2-6 overall; 2-3 division) sits in third place in the XFL South.
The Roughnecks got on the board first against the Brahmas, as they marched down the field on
a 12 play, 65-yard drive led by QB Brandon Silvers. He connected with WR Deontay Burnett for
a 3-yard touchdown to go up 6-0. The Brahmas would convert a 26-yard field goal on their
opening drive of the game, making the score 6-3 after one quarter of play.
After a punt by Houston to start the second quarter, San Antonio tied it up at 6-6 with another
field goal, this one coming from 42 yards out. DLs C.J. Brewer and Jack Heflin each came up
with a sack on the drive. On the ensuing Roughnecks’ drive, K Austin Jones knocked through a
41-yard field goal to put Houston back on top, 9-6. The first half would end with back-to-back
interceptions (DB William Likely for Houston and DB Jack Koerner for San Antonio).
A tipped interception by DL Trevon Mason set up the Roughnecks’ offense inside the Brahmas’
10-yard line early in the second half. Houston’s offense took advantage with a 5-yard TD pass
from Silvers to TE Garrett Owens, extending their lead to 15-6.
The fourth quarter consisted of five combined punts between the two teams, as Houston
attempted to ice the game away. Silvers would throw another interception with just a few
minutes remaining. San Antonio capitalized on the takeaway with a 2-yard TD run. An
unsuccessful 3-point attempt made the score 15-12, with the Roughnecks still on top. The
Brahmas nailed a 49-yard field goal with one second remaining to tie it up at 15-15.
In overtime, the Roughnecks converted 1/3 two-point attempts, while the Brahmas went 0/3.
The lone conversion, a pass from QB Cole McDonald to Burnett, gave the Roughnecks a 17-15
win in OT. With that win the Houston Roughnecks (5-3) have clinched a berth in the XFL South
Division Championship game.
The top two teams from each division advance to their respective championship games.
The South Division Championship game will be played on Saturday, April 29 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
