HOUSTON – University of Houston standout point guard Jamal Shead is headed to the NBA. Selected with the No. 45 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors, Shead joins a growing list of Cougars making the jump to professional basketball.

Shead's senior season at Houston was nothing short of spectacular. He led the Cougars to a dominant 32-5 record and their first Big 12 regular-season championship. The team also secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fifth straight season.

Recognized for his exceptional play, Shead was a unanimous Consensus First-Team All-American and earned the prestigious title of National Defensive Player of the Year. His impact extended beyond the court, as he was named the Big 12 Conference Male Athlete of the Year, a first for a Houston athlete.

Off the court, Shead graduated with a bachelor's degree in health promotions. His selection marks several milestones: he's the first Cougar drafted with the No. 45 overall pick and the first to join the Toronto Raptors organization.

As Shead embarks on his professional career, he carries with him a legacy of success and leadership from his time at the University of Houston.
