Canada and Mexico Battle for top spot
For Imediate Release via Concacaf
The top spot in Group B of the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship will be up for grabs when Canada face Mexico in their group stage finale on Tuesday at HEB Park in Edinburg, Texas.
With wins in their first two matches, both teams have already punched their ticket to the semifinals, but a first-place finish in the group remains the objective for two sides that have been flying high in the tournament. Canada’s attack has been impeccable through the first two games, with 20 goals scored. Jordy Huitema leads Canada in scoring with six goals, while Janine Beckie and Adriana Leon are not far behind with five and four goals, respectively.
Mexico have also proven to be lethal in front of goal in their 1-0 win against Jamaica and 6-0 triumph over Saint Kitts and Nevis. Renae Cuellar has been a headache for opposing defenses with three goals scored, while Jimena Lopez is another playmaking option, evidenced by her goal and two assists against Saint Kitts and Nevis. Something will have to give, as both teams have yet to concede in the CWOQ, setting the stage for what should be a memorable group finale.
