Griner named to the WNBA All-Defensive Secon Team
Mercury center Brittney Griner has been named to the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team for the third time in her career (2016, 2017, 2019). It marks the sixth time the 6-foot-8 center has been named to the WNBA All-Defensive team, having locking in First Team honors in 2014, 2015 and 2018. Griner tied Connecticut’s Jonquel Jones for first in the WNBA in blocks per game (2.0) this season and has now led the league in blocks per game in all seven of her WNBA seasons. She’s the only player in WNBA history to lead the league in blocks per game in seven consecutive seasons.
The WNBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner (34 points), Washington Mystics guard Ariel Atkins (27), Storm forward Alysha Clark (26), Sun forward Alyssa Thomas (25) and Mystics guard Natasha Cloud (25).
The WNBA’s 12 head coaches selected the All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position and were not permitted to vote for players from their own teams. Players earned five points for each First Team vote and three points for each Second Team vote. If a player received votes at multiple positions, she was slotted at the position where she received the most votes.
